TOPAS Advanced Polymers is a leading global manufacturer of cycloolefin copolymers (COC), which are setting new standards in the film and packaging industry. COC opens up new possibilities for flexible barrier and technical functional films, especially where performance, material efficiency and recyclability need to be combined.
Thanks to high stiffness, transparency, improved sealing properties and a very good aroma and water vapour barrier, COC enables the development of thinner and higher-performance PE- and PP-based packaging structures. In this way, functionality and design-for-recycling can be better combined.
In light of the PPWR, this approach is becoming increasingly important: in future, packaging must be designed to be even more consistently recyclable and reduced to the necessary minimum. COC can help to implement mono-material concepts in a more technically robust way, enable downgauging and avoid additional, recycling-critical material combinations.
Independent assessments by cyclos-HTP, RecyClass and CEFLEX confirm the relevance of COC for recyclable PE and PP film structures. Since 2025, COC has also been included in the minimum standard under the German Packaging Act (VerpackG), which further emphasises the regulatory relevance of the material for the German packaging market.
